Happy Tuesday, everyone! Lotus Fine Foods will be headed west to the CHFA West show in Vancouver this weekend – Saturday May 14 & Sunday May 15 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm daily. What a great opportunity to meet distributors, brokers, manufactures and creators of some of Canada’s top organic and natural health products.

The National Women’s Show

Breakfast at its finest

Don’t you agree that one tricky part about the mornings is eating a healthy breakfast? The morning rush can sometimes deter us from making healthy choices, but breakfast really doesn’t have to be a huge production; you simply just need a bowl and spoon.

We have three easy breakfast ideas that will take you from your bed to the classroom (or office).  All you need is your appetite!

Mason jars are pretty great for everything, including breakfast. If you don’t have time to eat at home, bring it with you to enjoy in the car, on the bus or while you’re walking. Simply mix some of your favourite yogurt, Lotus Fine Foods Quinoa Granola and your fruit of choice into a mason jar, screw on the lid and remember your spoon!

Three-way powerhouse breakfast

For this one, you’ll need Lotus Fine Foods Quinoa Granola, a banana and some OJ. Which ever way you choose to have it, this breakfast will provide you will the protein to keep you held over until snack or lunch, the vitamin C to keep you feeling energized and fibre to regulate and aid digestion.

If you want to have a plain-Jane breakfast, simply snack on the Quinoa Granola straight from the bag, pour yourself a glass of orange juice and peel back your banana.

For breakfast in a glass, blend the banana and orange juice in a blender and sprinkle with some Quinoa Granola for a little crunch.

For a little creative spin, opt to dip your banana in the Quinoa Granola and eat it that way. Finish it off with a glass of OJ and you’re ready for a full day of learning!

Healthy Summer Snacking

Summer snacking doesn’t have to be boring or tasteless, especially when you’re snacking on Lotus Fine Foods Quinoa Granola! This week Lotus shared her favourite summer snack ideas, including a recipe for Energy Balls made with Lotus Fine Foods Quinoa Granola, on CTV Atlantic and Global Halifax. She had a wonderful time and was very happy to be able to share her healthy snacks with everyone watching.

Energy Balls are an easy, no-bake, go-to summer snack that are fantastic to bring to the beach, dock, a picnic or a sporting event. They are also free from refined sugars, low in sodium, gluten free and full of fibre.

Lotus Fine Foods Energy Balls 

1/2 cup natural nut/seed butter
1 tbsp agave nectar
1 1/4 cups gluten free oats
Single serve package of Lotus Fine Foods Quinoa Granola (1/3 cup)
1/2 cup chocolate chips (or nuts/seeds/dried fruit)

Combine the ingredients and roll into bite-size balls. Refrigerate until firm (about one hour).

They are that easy!

Other healthy snack ideas to accompany the Energy Balls include:

– Greek Yogurt
– Veggies and dip
– Homemade trail mix (dried fruit, almonds, sunflower seeds, chocolate chips)
– Yogurt tubes (if you freeze them, they act as an edible freezer pack for the snack bag)
– Sliced fruit with melted chocolate

It’s All in the Sunflower

The National Sunflower Association’s July issue is all about sunflower oil! The report features top food trends, a Q&A regarding sunflower oil and profiles our Quinoa Granola.

The sunflower seeds added to our granolas not only create texture but pack a nutritional punch of vitamin E and magnesium. Vitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant and has a significant anti-inflammatory effect, and magnesium is necessary for healthy bones and energy production. Sunflower seeds are also a great source of protein, they make the perfect snack!

We use non-GMO sunflower oil to give our granolas a longer shelf life, than other oils would allow. The great thing about sunflower oil is that it has a neutral taste so it allows the flavours of the other ingredients (like the quinoa and seeds) to come through.

A Safe Summer Read

Sitting outside in the warm sun with a cold drink in one hand is the perfect setting for a good read. We all have our favourite magazines, but when it comes to food allergies, finding a magazine that includes safe recipes is not always easy. Fortunately there is Allergic Living, a magazine for people with food allergies, celiac disease, gluten sensitivity or environmental allergies.
