Natural Remedies That Everyone Can Benefit From

It was in New Life Magazine, an alternative health magazine, and it was written by David Wolfe, who is arguably the most well-known figure in the raw food world. While the title says it is the 10 Top Natural Remedies for Women’s Health, I believe that the list is just as applicable to men.

MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS

He mentions one of the most popular medicinal mushrooms, reishi. Very high in antioxidants, protects body from free radicals, and good for heart disease and blood pressure.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

He talks about how these are important for women to balance hormones. David Wolfe also mentions how an excess of omega-6 fatty acids and rancid trans-fatty acids lead to inflammation in the body.

David suggests foods that have alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) – chlorella, marine phytoplankton, hemp seeds, chia seeds and flax seeds. For non-vegetarians, fish oil.

B-VITAMINS

B-Vitamins are essential, especially B-6, B-9 and B-12. They help fight stress and combat environmental toxicity that gets into our bodies.

MACA

A superfood from the Andes that has been around for thousands of years. It is an adaptogen that increases energy, strength and libido, and contains 10% protein and 20 amino acids.

PROBIOTICS

David Wolfe quotes Donna Gates, the author of The Body Ecology Diet, who says that consuming probiotics and eating fermented foods help to keep the immune system strong.

ASTRAGALUS

An herb in Chinese medicine that has been used for thousands of years. David Wolfe says that it is great for anti-aging and for the immune system.

GOJI BERRIES

Sun-dried, red berries that have been used in Chinese medicine for over 5,000 years. Great for the eyes, high in antioxidants and associated with longevity and beauty.

My Take: I like goji berries and they are a very popular superfood within the raw food community.

CACAO

David Wolfe is a massive fan of cacao, has written books on it and touts it all of the time. He believes that it is the strongest antioxidant on the planet, #1 source of manganese, elevates mood and balances brain chemistry.

ALOE VERA

David Wolfe says raw aloe vera contains vitamins A, C, E and many other minerals and amino acids. It is also important for weight loss and has anti-fungal properties.

GROUNDING

By walking barefoot on the earth (grass, sand, soil, forest, etc.), we can help neutralize the electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) and other types of radiation from all of the computers, cell phones, PDAs and Wi-Fi. Connecting with the energy of the earth is critical and is the most powerful antioxidant that we can access.

David Wolfe mentions a book called Earthing by Clint Ober, who has compiled research on this subject, and it looks very, very interesting.

How Do We Reverse The Fattening Of Our Nation?

The New York Daily News released excerpts from a study by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on May 08, 2012 on obesity. Currently one third of Americans are obese and the projections are that this number will rise to an alarming 42% by 2030. The toll on the health care costs will be in the hundreds of billions of dollars. If you think that Canadians are different – think again.

The NDP wants to change menus to reflect calories and sodium levels, per a report this week. Many will come out in favour of this change hoping that it will help combat the alarming obesity increase in our nation. But is it enough to reverse this alarming trend? Are we going far enough to reverse the diet related problems in our nation? Scientists are warning us that for the first time this new generation will not outlive their parents. Poor eating and inactivity levels are the cause.

Knowing what we are eating is important but only a portion of the population will pay attention. There will be many excuses – who cares it is my Birthday, Anniversary, Graduation, my first time in a restaurant in a month etc etc etc. Then there are those that are so detached from their own health management that they live in denial and are just eating mindlessly. This is the eating for sad, lonely, depressed, unhappy group.

We are missing another important piece of the diet and health management discussion – serving size reduction. It is no coincidence that the fattening of North America is in direct proportion to the serving size on our plates. How many times have you heard someone say in a restaurant – “I could not possibly eat all this” and then proceed to eat every morsel? “This is huge” “This is enough for a family of four”. You name it – we have heard every this is too much comment. The trouble is that we are a generation programmed to ‘clean our plates’.

What is the big deal you ask with extra calories on our plates? Well, the math is simple – an extra 10 calories a day could add up to an extra pound of weight gain per year. Therefore, if you are consuming an extra 100 calories from soft drinks and snacks every day you could pack on an additional 10 pounds per year. What is that common adage about students heading off to first year university – the “freshman 15”? It is not referring to the increase in their marks but rather their waistline!

The then and now charts for portion size currently when compared to the 1950’s is alarming. French fries have gone from 2.4 oz to 7.1 oz; Soft drinks 7.0 oz to anywhere from 12 to 64 oz depending on if you ‘Upsize’ your order; Hamburger patty 1.6 oz to 8.0 oz (really a family serving); Muffin 3.0 oz to 6.5 oz; Chocolate bar 1 oz to a range of 2.6 to 8 oz.

Here are some suggestions on how to manage those larger portions:

1. Share a meal

2. Eat half or less

3. Skip second helpings or the all you can eat option

4. Slow down and chew. It takes your brain 20 minutes to figure out that you are full so give your brain and your stomach the time they need to communicate

5. Learn to read food labels

6. Use a smaller plate

7. Avoid the buffet line

Current food guides indicate that one half of your plate should be vegetables and fruit. One quarter of your plate should be grains and one quarter protein. A suggested serving of chicken, fish or beef would be the size of the palm of your hand. Cheese should be limited to the size of your thumb.

This is a challenge for the food industry. Reduction in portion size would have many positive benefits apart from the obvious impact on our health as a nation. Smaller portion sizes mean more control over soaring food costs. The industry would be better able to manage their increasing costs while reducing the impact to the consumer. Smaller food containers mean less waste and impact on the environment. Then there is the obvious reduction in medical costs.

Healthier eating is everyone’s responsibility and it will take the consumers, the politicians and the industry to bring about the changes needed.

Technically, quinoa (KEEN-wah) is classified not as a grain but as a type of seed. Quinoa provides a complete protein, making it especially valuable for those who prefer to reduce or completely eliminate animal protein from their diets. It contains all the essential amino acids, including lysine, which is crucial for growing and repairing body tissues. One cup of quinoa provides 9 grams of protein which is one more gram than a medium chicken egg.

Migraine Protection

Its high magnesium and riboflavin (B2) content make quinoa an excellent nutritional ally for migraine sufferers. This seed-like grain has prebiotic properties, feeding the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. Since it is easily digested, your body can readily access the vitamins and minerals it contains. Quinoa also provides a good source of insoluble fiber, promoting healthy elimination processes, helping maintain colon health and preventing the formation of gallstones. The folate and vitamin B in quinoa also boost the liver’s ability to eliminating toxins from the body. People at high risk for cancer, as well as those with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease are often advised to eat more whole grains, yet if they have celiac disease or other forms of gluten sensitivities, they must steer clear of many popular grain products. Quinoa is gluten-free, so those who cannot tolerate gluten can eat it.

Anti-oxidant

Quinoa also offers nearly half the daily minimum requirement for manganese and is a good source of copper and zinc. These minerals are necessary to the synthesis of the superoxide dismutase (S.O.D.) enzyme, an important antioxidant. The S.O.D. enzyme eliminates free radicals which can cause oxidation damage in the body. It not only slows the effects of aging, but may help eliminate cancer cells. Several vitamin companies offer S.O.D. supplements but quinoa enables your body to produce its own natural enzymes.

8 Tips To Pull Off A Bikini-Ready Body

Summer is right around the corner. Are you too timid to pull out your bathing suit? Here are some tips to help you lose that stubborn weight and get bikini ready:

1. Hydrate: Studies show that when you drink plenty of water and other healthy drinks, not only does your skin look healthier, it also helps flush toxins that promote weight gain. Your hydration can come in many forms including herbal teas. Lots of vegetables and fruits have a good water content and add to the overall daily requirement.

2. Veggies, veggies, veggies: Load up on those great healthy vegetables. Add lots of colour and variety to your diet. It increases fibre and nutrition and boosts your metabolism.

3. Walk to the store: Leave the car at home and take a walk to the supermarket. Make it a daily practice to go for a walk with the family after dinner, because walking helps promote digestion. Think about it – that extra 50-100 calories you’re burning on a walk adds up quickly. In fact, you can burn over 1500-3000 calories a month with that little walk!

4. Find a work out buddy: Studies prove that having a work out buddy will keep you on track. Make that daily date for a walk or to meet at the gym and you will be successful in your exercise program.

5. Set a goal and stick to it: Grab a friend and you can both set a goal for the next month or two. Don’t make it unreasonable. A drop of 5 pounds is doable and sustainable. Realistic goals are achievable goals. Imagine how good you will feel shedding a pound a month and being 12 pounds lighter for your next birthday!

6. Find a seamstress: This is my favourite trick for success. Do not go out and buy new clothes half way through the weight loss plan. New clothes can make you feel great and will potentially prevent you from getting to your goal. Instead make friends with your seamstress. Take in all those too big things. You will save big bucks and the image in the mirror will fool you into believing that you have not changed. Just the push you need to keep going. Save those bucks for a great new wardrobe and the big reveal.

7. Avoid commercials: Get up and do a little exercise every time a commercial comes on. Not only do you add to your activity level but you avoid all those nasty food commercials that can set off negative suggestions to go to the kitchen and eat!

8. Switch your breakfast cereal: Most granolas have a high fat and sugar content which does not fit well with a balanced, sensible diet for optimal health.
